Is LegalShield Worth It? A Straight Answer From a Colorado Associate.
If you're a small business owner or a Colorado family trying to figure out whether LegalShield is actually worth the monthly cost, you're probably tired of vague marketing pages that don't answer the question. So here's a direct one, from someone who sells this every day and has nothing to gain by oversimplifying it.
Worth it when
- You handle contracts, leases, or vendor agreements regularly
- You need debt collection letters on law firm letterhead
- You have employment or HR questions that come up during the year
- You want a will, or predictable legal costs instead of hourly bills
Not the right tool when
- You are already in active litigation on the matter you need help with
- The legal issue began before your membership started
- You need a retained attorney for one large, complex, ongoing case
Short answer
LegalShield works well if you deal with routine legal questions more than once or twice a year. Contract reviews, employment questions, debt collection letters, a will you’ve been putting off, a lease you’re not sure about. If those situations come up for you or your business, the monthly fee pays for itself the first time you use it instead of paying an attorney by the hour.
It is not a substitute for a retained attorney handling a complex lawsuit, and it will not cover a legal issue that started before you signed up. If your business is already in active litigation, this isn’t the right tool for that specific problem, though it can still help with everything else that comes up around it.
What you actually get
A LegalShield membership connects you to a dedicated law firm in your state. You call them directly, the same way you’d call your own attorney, without watching a clock. For business plans, that typically includes unlimited consultation on day to day legal matters, contract and document review, and debt collection letters sent on law firm letterhead when someone owes you money and isn’t paying.
Personal plans cover things like will preparation, traffic matters, and phone consultations on issues that come up in everyday life. Combine a business plan with a personal plan and you get coverage if you’re personally named in a lawsuit or an IRS audit tied to the business, which is worth knowing because business and personal legal exposure aren’t as separate as people assume.
About the cancellation complaints
I’m not going to pretend these don’t exist, because you’ll find them if you look, and pretending otherwise would be a bad way to earn your trust. Some LegalShield members have reported that canceling by phone alone wasn’t enough, and that a written cancellation by email or mail was also required to fully stop billing.
Here’s the practical fix, and I tell every member this up front: if you ever decide to cancel, do it in writing and keep a copy. An email works. That one step avoids almost all of the friction people report. If you’re a member of mine and this ever comes up, contact me directly and I’ll walk you through it so there’s no confusion on either end.
IDShield, if you’re bundling identity protection
A lot of members pair a legal plan with IDShield, LegalShield’s identity theft protection. Every plan includes up to $3 million in identity theft insurance to help cover eligible financial losses and legal fees if you’re a victim, along with credit monitoring and access to licensed private investigators who work on your behalf to restore your identity if something goes wrong. Individual plans start at $14.95 a month.
Who this is actually a good fit for
Small business owners in construction, trades, transportation, healthcare, staffing, and hospitality tend to see the most use out of it, mostly because contracts, collections, and employment questions come up constantly in those industries. Families who want predictable legal costs instead of a surprise attorney bill also do well with it.
If you run a business with complex, ongoing legal needs, you likely need both this and a retained attorney for the bigger matters. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.
Talk it through
I work with small business owners and families across Colorado and Wyoming, and I’d rather walk you through exactly what’s covered for your situation than have you guess from a sales page. No obligation.
